To me this reading focuses on how dehumanized the prisoners at Buna and many other concentration camps were. People only cared about themselves They would do anything to survive. The main priority in life was food. Food was needed to survive. The small amount of food given to the inmates was very valuable and the only thing really keeping them alive. The need of food is shown in this reading. Around 10 o’clock sirens went off. All of the Jews were gathered inside the blocks, while the S.S troops went into the shelters. No one was guarding the area. In the kitchen there were two cauldrons of soup.
Everyone had their eyes on the soup but no one dared to go near the soup. This once again shows how scared the Jews and other inmates were of the S.S troops and the Nazis. Suddenly the door of block 37 opened and a man crawled to the soup like a snake. The man made it to the two bowls of soup. Everyone was still watching him in silence. He made it to the soup but was to weak or scared to pull himself up to the rim of the bowls. The man finally was able to pull himself up and looked at his reflection in the bowl of soup. He lets out a scream for no apparent reason and then is shot and killed.
Overall to me this is a very sad seen. Just to see the extreme measures the inmates would take to get food. This seen sounds like it should be apart of a movie or T.V show. It honestly doesn’t seem real. I can’t picture this in my mind and I’m glad I can’t. Elie had to live with these images in his head all of his life. They never went away clearly because of how clearly he can write and talk about it.
