Ellie Wiesel's Dad

Ellie Wiesel's dad is much older than most at the concentration camps. He probably is one of the oldest people there. He has been struggling more than most to try and stay alive and keep his head low and not get in trouble. Franek used him to get to Ellie and take his gold tooth and he had to put up with it until Ellie relinquished his gold tooth. He was beaten and humiliated everyday for it and even mocked for having his son train him to march yet still fail nonetheless. To be beaten at by Idek mercilessly and his child be angry at him he has gone through a lot. Even worse he is old making his will and resistance worse than most.
He used to be held at a high esteem by most of the Jews who now see him and everyone else suffer and be dehumanized. No leaders and no one to step up and help guide the Jews they suffer. As in this chapter specifically as they are getting used to everything and adjusting to the survival mentality lifestyle. Those surviving better than others seem to be doing better. As in this chapter they were called after eating soup bowls and forced to run at their fastest. They would have to run very very fast, if they were good their names were not noted down. However the slow were noted down and kept. Ellie's dad was noted down and they were forced to stay later. It was brutal and his dad assumed he would not make it. He gave his son his spoon and knife hoping he would use it, branding it his inheritance. It was a sad moment for Ellie as it seemed it would be the last time he would see his dad. He was transported to hard labor twelve hours a day he would have to leave and wait to see what happens to his dad until the day was over to see if he was sent to the crematories or not. He went off to work and that is when the chapter seemed to end.
