Again, we see that Elie continues to struggle with his faith, and struggling to know if there is a God existing. He finds it hard to bless a God that has let his fellow Jews burn in crematories and die for no reason except for they are Jewish. People would continue to say to Elie that he should praise and bless God, but Elie can never praise and bless a God that has let so many people died for no good reason. Elie wishes that a God that he would believe in wouldn't abandon his people in a time of need. Elie wants to believe in a God that would save everyone, not someone who picks and chooses who he wants to live and who he wants to be killed. Elie hears people saying that everything is going to be okay, if they just believe in God, and wait out the tragedy, they will be able to get everything they ever wanted, if only they just keep believing in God. Elie finds these people foolish, because he thinks that God has abandoned them and left them to die. They tell Elie to praise and bless the Lord, when really, Elie hates and resents him for letting so many people die. I find it very sad, how someone can change their view on their faith in only a small amount of time. I think that Elie has a very good reason for giving up on his faith, but he should still try to keep that hope of something good might come if he just wait for something to happen. He shouldn't completely give up on his faith, but he should try harder to keep his faith, and continue to believe, praise, and bless the Lord.
I feel bad for Elie, because he is struggling so much with his faith. It is hard to understand what he is going through. All that we can do is try to think about the emotions he is feeling. Elie doubts his faith a lot, but I have never doubted my faith in knowing that there is a God. Elie continually can't see if a God exists throughout all of the death and pain he has witnessed. I could never imagine what he is going through every day, all I try to do is picture it, and realize that there really is no explanation for why the Holocaust happened. Why did so many innocent people die on God's watch? I think that Elie wants that question to be answered, but no one is answering it, so he becomes angry with people who want to believe in God. He doesn't understand the people that think everything is going to be okay if we just trust in the Lord, because he will save them from their fate. Elie has stopped putting his faith in God overtime. He went from crying to unbelieving in a short amount of time, with very little warning. A couple of years ago, Elie would have never thought that he would be doubting his faith in a concentration camp. He would have only ever thought of praying to God, which is very sad to think about. I can only imagine what Elie is going through, and even though it is hard to explain, you are able to understand why Elie has almost completely given up on God.
