Everything is Wrong

In what we had to read for today, many things happened. In the begging of Chapter 5, summer is ending. On the last day of the Jewish year, when their evening meal was served, they all waited until after prayer to eat. Elie later that night begins to question God and why he should bless him. Elie no longer wants or needs God in his life. On the Day of Atonement, many Jews would normally fast, but Jews were now conflicted as to if they should or not because they were already eating so little. Elie and his father did not fast, because they did not need to, they would be doing it for no one. Not long after their new year had started, the SS announced that a selection would take place. Elie and his father no longer lived on the same block, Elie had been moved to work on construction, for twelve hours a day. After selection, they were told that nothing would happen to them that time. It would not have mattered much for Elie because Elie's number had not been written down. Elie and his father met after the selection, they both said that their numbers had not been taken down. A few days later, when the inmates were preparing to go to work, they were told that the people that the SS would name off would not be going to work that day. Just before going to work, Elie found his father and found out that his father had been told to stay at camp.

I feel really bad for everything that had happened not only to Elie, but to all of the Jews. Many Jews have absolutely no will to live and are completely dehumanized. Most of the Jews were only living for themselves. If I were a Jew, at this time, I would rather hand myself over to the officers than live in the conditions that they are. I also feel really bad for Elie because the one person that ha had left to live for, is more than likely going to be killed.

  1. Sami, I can understand your sadness for the Jews, and why you would hand yourself over to die than to work and live. The separation of families, and all of the systematic death and destruction really disgusts me on how people can do such things, and I can see that in your post. Also, the meme explains what the German people did all throughout the Holocaust; nothing. They didn't even try to help or speak out against the treatment of the Jews.
