Elie and other Jewish people are stuffed into a box car, they were given food and water. It was difficult for everyone to lie and sit down, so many had to take turns. There was hardly air inside, but people who were near a window were lucky. After two days, food and water was beginning to run out, but they never ate enough to fully fill them up. The train stopped in Kashau, and a German Officer stepped in and was accompanied with a Hungarian Lieutenant. They told everyone that they were now under the aurootihy of the German Army, including that if anyone still had any belongings with them they would have to hand it over or be shot. 80 people were stuffed inside the box car, so if anyone goes missing they would all be shot. Elie knew a woman that was in the box car, her name was Mrs. Schachter, she was with her ten year old son and had been separated from her husband and two older sons. The sperration had shattered her completely, on the first day of the trip she began to moan. She kept asking herself why they were separated from her family, later she sobbed and screamed. On the third night while everyone was sleeping, there was a terrible piercing cry saying "Fire! I see a fire!" Everyone got up to look out the window, there was no fire but only darkness. She would hysterically scream many times after that, so she received many blows to the head. Her son would cry while grabbing her skirt, and she would continue to cry. She had gone mad, she was having hallucinations because she was thirsty. They pulled into a station, someone near the window read to them "Auschwitz"
The train did not move again, the door opened and two men were allowed to fetch water.
When they came back they had exchanged their gold watch for information, they said that it was their final destination. There was a camp on site, they were told families wouldn't be separated. The Jews were condinet and thanked God. Mrs. Schachter would remain at her corner while her child was stroking her hand. They ate their final food and were looking for a position to sleep, when suddenly Mrs. Schachter would scream fire again. For a second people believed her, she was struck on the head again. One of the men called for a guard and told him that they should take her to a hospital bed, they man said "Patience, She'll be taken there soon." The trained slowly moved and they began to see barbed wire. Again suddenly, Mrs. Schachter yelled for a fire gain and this time they saw flames rising from chimneys. The boxcar opened and they were greeted by people dressed in striped jackets and black pants. They began to strike at them, yelling so they they get out.

Good job on your blog post and good job summarizing the chapter. This was hard for the Jews because they had to deal with all of this and they were trapped from the Nazis false sense of hope. Mrs. Schachter kept screaming there was a fire because she is a prophet. The people in the train to her to settle down because she got separated from her family, but she did not stop. The Jews beat her to stop and I felt this was heartbreaking because she was a prophet, but other people didn't know, so they thought she was crazy.
ReplyDeleteGreat job on talking about how the Jews had little to nothing room and how they had to take turns sitting down, due to having no room to move around. Also great job on talking about Mrs. Schachter and how she had screamed fire, also talking about how the people had believed that she had been going crazy, but in reality she had actually seen smoke. Great job on going into depths with those two topics. This had really covered up how the Jews had been a tight spot with little to nothing air, and that they had been late and that they should have listened to her. Great job Emily!
ReplyDeleteYOu got a lot of information here. You did a good job first explaining what the box car was like and how people were situated. You had a lot of detail revolving around Mrs. Schachter the main character of this chapter. Talking about her ten year old son and how she is freaking out about a fire. Also good meme that is pretty funny.
ReplyDeleteNice job in your blog post Emily. I like how you were very detailed with Mrs. Schachter and how she was screaming that there was a fire and how she started to cry. You also did a good job on how the officer came with the Hungarian and told all of them to give their values to them. Again nice job with your blog post Emily and I also found your meme funny.
ReplyDeleteYou did a good job on this blog post, nice summary with important points of what we've read. Good details on Ms. Schachter and how crowded it was in the box car. You also had some good detail of when the train had stopped and they had water and had to give up their valuables. I also really like the meme at the end:)
