The Selection

Chapter 5 started with Elie having a holiday and the SS gave the Jews a "gift" in which they were transferred to a different camp. When Elie and his father go to the camp they were forced to do heavier work and they got less food. On the Jewish holiday every Jew had to fast but most of them did not because they would just die form starvation. Elie did not follow God anymore because he does not trust in him anymore. Elie can only rely on himself and he would mock the others on why they shouldn't have their faith in God. When Elie and his father arrived at the camp they had to deal with a new issue where they were going to be selected to be killed. They would have to run to prevent being counted and do other things to avoid the selection. Elie and his father were running as fast as they can but Elie's father was counted down. Elie's father then gave Elie a knife and a spoon because that was his only possession he had on him left. It turns out that lies father wasn't selected to be dead. Elie then gave his fathers things back to him to show that he wouldn't die. Elie later on had an infected foot where he had to rest at a doctors place. It was peaceful there but Elie would run the risk of being killed if he stayed there too long because the soldiers would think you were weak and have no use to work.

In my opinion I feel very bad for Elie because he would always be in a bad spot of wither being killed or having someone close to him killed. Elie has also lost faith in God and only cares about himself. He did feel empty inside when he started to drift farther away from God. Elie almost lost his father and could of died having an infected foot. When Elie was resting at the doctors he had to either stay there for a couple of days and run the risk of being caught by the SS or he would have to work and have his foot amputated. Elie has to make a tough decision on whether he would risk his life or get his leg cut off. I feel bad for all of the Jews because they would only have to care about themselves and put aside their religions or else they would die. You could only care about yourself and not anyone else. I dont believe Elie should abandon God but the position that he is in, is making it very difficult for him to believe in God.

  1. Dang good job on your blog post. I also feel very bad for Elie, because he is getting starved, whipped, and more. I also agree when you said that he seems to get further, and further away from God, and that he feels an empty hole in his stomach. It also would of been a very hard decision for him to either stay in the infermary, or get selected to go to the crematory. I also feel bad for the jews, because all that has happened to them had made them stop believing in God.
