Why Didn't They Listen?

We recently started to read Night and it was very interesting and educational. We are learning about the holocaust and what the Jews and Germans were doing about it. In the beginning of the chapter, Elie is a twelve year old that lives in Sighet. He is very religious and said that he even cried when he prayed, may people asked him why he prayed but he never had an answer. Then, he decided to get a teacher to teach him about the Torah and the special text. His father, who was a store owner and seemed to be very closed about his feelings, he told Elsie that he was too young to get a master and that he needed to wait time and didn't help him get a master. However, Elie found a master named Moishe, who was very imaginative and was full of life. For hours, they would study on part of the scripture to fully understand it until completely. This went on until one day, the foreign Jews were taken from Sighet. Nobody knew where they were heading but didn't care much. Moishe was one of the foreigners and left. However, he was found in the city a few months later and he had news to give. He said that the Germans wanted to kill all of the Jews and they were taken far off to the woods and after wards, they were ordered to dig their own graves and one by one, would get shot in the neck. Children were also launched into the air and used as targets for the Germans to practice with machine guns. This scene was horrendous and Moshie came to warn them but no one listened.

But, a few days later German soldiers came and were actually very kind to the Jews. So, they didn't worry and ignored poor Moishe. However, after a few days the act was over and the Germans started to implement the Nuremberg laws and started to become more violent. Jews were then transformed to a Ghetto and they still had hope, they believed things would get better at any moment. However, things didn't get better but they still had false hope. Soon after, they were transported to concentration camps without knowing it. They were going to die soon and were going to live in torment for some time. I personally find it very interesting to learn about the Holocaust to prevent something similar to happen in the future. The things Germans did to the Jews is barely unthinkable and very inhuman. I can't understand why someone would do something like that, but most of the leaders of the concentration camps were not mentally stable and treated the Jews horrible. The Jews and disable aren't responsible of the war and shouldn't have been treated that way. But, I still don't comprehend why the Jews didn't escape. I know the Germans were cunning but they still should have been able to understand that the Germans wanted to kill them. They should have rebelled.

  1. I like that you gave a lot of detail in your post it made it interesting and enjoyable to read. You also made a lot of good connections to different scenes in the book so far. I agree with you for the most part. I still don't understand why the Jews didn't just run away and I don't think I ever will because I have never been in that situation or something similar to that. I also won't understand because I have more knowledge about what would happen and what happened to many Jews during the Holocaust. Many Jews still had hope and thought nothing bad was happening to them and there was nothing worse. By the time they realised what was going to happen it was to late to do anything.

  2. Good job on your blog post Alexandra, there was a lot of detail, and information that you had put in this blog post. I agree with you that the Jews, and the other undesirable people were not the cause of the war. I as well felt that they should not have been treated that way like if they were animals. I have the same question as you of why the Jews did not escape, they could of gotten away easily because there were no guards in the ghetto. I also agree with you that the Jews should of rebelled against the Germans. Overall Alexandra, you had a great blog post, in your summary was very detailed, and I agree everything that you had to say. Great job Alexandra.
